No Cooker symbol to TTV Dhinakaran: SC

The Supreme Court today refused to direct the Election Commission of India to allot 'Cooker' symbol to Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam led by TTV Dhinakaran.

When a plea in this regard by Dhinakaran came up for hearing, the apex court said the Election Commission can decide whether to allocate the particular symbol to Dhinakaran or not.The Election Commission had recently said it cannot allot the cooker symbol to AMMK. The nephew of jailed AIADMK supreme V K Sasikala had filed a plea in the Supreme Court for the symbol ahead of the Tiruvarur bypolls. The EC informed the court that it cannot allot the symbol Dhinakaran  as it was a “common symbol” that was meant only for registered parties.

Tiruvarur by-election was announced due to the death of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. However, it was cancelled by the Election commission latter due to the Gaja cyclone relief work.Meanwhile, Dhinakaran had ruled out merger with the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam and alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party."The Union Minister has expressed his wish but we will never join hands with the AIADMK. Dr MGR left the DMK because the party is an evil force. Similarly, the AIADMK is a party of betrayers. We will not join hands with them just because they are in power," he said.
He said this after Union Minister Ramdas Athawale urged AMMK Leader TTV Dhinakaran to join hands with the ruling AIADMK.Dhinakaran further said AMMK has strongly established itself in Tamil Nadu in a short span since its inception in March 2018.
